HOME IMPROVEMENT HOUSE PLANS How To

How to Get More From Your Sunroom

Sunroom

Maybe you were excited to buy a home with a sunroom, but you’re finding that in reality you don’t spend much time in it. If your sunroom is just a place for junk to accumulate, you’re missing out on great functional living space.

Here are some tips to help you get the most from your sunroom.

Install Temperature Control

Sunrooms really aren’t designed to be the same temperature as the rest of the house. In colder parts of the country, people often use sunrooms only part of the year, closing them off during the coldest months.

Regardless of where you live, you probably find that sunrooms are hotter or colder than the rest of the house and that temperatures fluctuate depending on whether the sun is out or not. If you would like to enjoy your sunroom regardless of what the weather is doing, you’ll want to install a wall ac unit. A refurbished unit won’t cost much, but it will make you comfortable in your sunroom whether it’s hot or cold outside.

Make it Comfortable

You’ll be much more likely to hang out in your sunroom if there is plenty of comfortable seating to draw you in. Most sunrooms have hard floors, so try tossing down a few rugs to make them seem warmer and more inviting.

Encourage kids (and maybe grown-ups as well) to sit on the floor and play board games. Place games on a low shelf and toss a few bean bags, pillows, or cushions on the floor.

You can transform part of the sunroom to display memorabilia from your favorite sports athletes or teams for the family to enjoy. Adding certain items and equipment will help your little ones hone their skills. If you play golf, teach your kids how to manage their strokes with the help of a putting mat.

Create a space that people will want to be in, and you’ll find that the family is drawn into the sunroom, whereas previously, they stuck to the living room and the television.

Add Some Plants, but Don’t Go Overboard

One of the reasons to have a sunroom in your home is to draw the outside in and feel like you’re in a garden while enjoying the comforts of being inside. Whether you have a green thumb or not, you’ll probably get some pleasure from having plants in your sunroom.

You’ll likely find that you are enticed into the room to peek at the plants throughout the day and that they relax you while you’re hanging out in the sunroom. However, too many plants can be stressful, constantly reminding you of a project that needs to be done.

Something else to keep in mind is that it’s also harder to control insect infestations and other issues when there are too many plants. Keep a couple of featured plants in your sunroom and take good care of them. You’ll find that they add a lot to your sunroom.

Enjoy Your Sunroom to the Fullest

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on renovations to get the most from your sunroom. For a couple of hundred dollars, you can install temperature control, make the space comfortable with bean bags and board games, and enjoy the relaxing presence of a few well-cared-for plants. You’ll soon find that your sunroom is your new favorite space in your home.
