How to choose a drill

Not all drills are the same. In order to choose the most convenient one, you must first find out about its characteristics, types and powers.

Drills are essential tools for tasks as varied as assembling furniture or hanging pictures and lamps. In addition, thanks to its variety of accessories, it allows other jobs such as screwing, sanding, grinding, polishing or stripping all types of surfaces.

Power Type: Wireless or Wired?

The first decision when choosing is whether you want it to run on battery (cordless) or electrically (corded).

Corded drill:

  • Uses:  It is ideal if you are going to work on very hard surfaces such as concrete or steel.
  • Advantages : Complete availability and maximum performance continuously. You are ready to go as long as you have an electrical outlet.
  • Disadvantages:  They are somewhat heavier than cordless drills. The cable can be annoying to work with at certain times.

When choosing a corded drill, consider:

1. Power: determines the force of the drill and is expressed in watts (W). The higher the power, the easier it will be to pierce resistant materials.
2. Spin speed and torque (turning force) : Most come with the ability to select at least two spin speeds. A slow speed makes the drill turn more slowly but with more force, so it is recommended for working on very hard materials such as metal. Meanwhile, high speed is recommended for all other materials.
3. Reverse function – virtually all drills rotate in both directions. This makes it possible to carry out screwing and unscrewing work.
4. Percussion: machines that incorporate the percussion function perform both a turning and a hammering movement.

  • Without impact : they are used for screwing or drilling work in all kinds of materials that do not have excessive hardness.
  • With percussion : you will be able to drill in all types of materials, even those of greater hardness like steel and concrete.

Cordless drills

    • Uses:  Ideal for household tasks such as assembling a piece of furniture or hanging a picture. However, there are also professional cordless drills with features like a corded drill.
    • Advantages: Lighter and more portable, it allows greater freedom of movement and work in places where there is no electrical outlet (such as outdoors, gardens, basements, etc.).
    • Disadvantages: We  must take into account the autonomy of the battery, which can be limiting when carrying out long-term work.

Battery types

  • Lithium : they are lighter, charge faster, have a longer service life and also discharge more slowly, allowing you to work longer.
  • Nickel-cadmium : they are cheaper, but the trend is that their use is decreasing.
  • Voltage: The voltage is expressed in volts (V): the higher the voltage, the greater the working capacity.

The rest of the features are the same as the electric (corded) drills.

Drill marks

There is a wide variety of drill brands on the market for different uses. Black + Decker is the most popular brand among drills for home use, but there are also brands like Klatter, Gamma , Daewoo , Hamilton , among others.
