Modular Kitchen Layouts That Work in Small Apartments
The work triangle still matters, but in a small kitchen the real constraint is landing space.

Galley layouts suit narrow rooms and are the most efficient per square foot. L-shaped layouts work when one corner is open to a living area. U-shaped needs at least 2.4m of width to avoid feeling like a trench. Island layouts need 1m of clearance on every side to function, which most small apartments simply do not have.
Protect the landing space
You need a clear worktop run beside the hob and beside the sink — at least 400mm each. Kitchens that fail in daily use almost always failed here, not in the work triangle.
Go tall before you go wide
Full-height units to the ceiling add substantial storage without taking any extra floor. The top shelf is for things you use twice a year, and that is fine.
Get drawers, not cupboards, below the counter
Deep drawers with good runners give you access to the back of the unit without kneeling on the floor. It is the single upgrade people say they would repeat.
