Concentrated effort in two or three places beats a thin layer of decoration everywhere.

Choose two focal points and commit

The entrance and one main room. Decorating everything at a low intensity looks tired; decorating two areas properly looks intentional and costs less.

Light does more than anything you can buy

Warm string lights, diyas or candles change a room more dramatically per rupee than any other decoration. Keep the colour temperature consistent — mixing warm and cool light is what makes festive lighting look cheap.

Reuse the structure, change the details

Keep the same garlands, frames and holders year to year, and change only the flowers, ribbons or fabric. Storage of good base pieces is cheaper than replacement of everything.

Buy fresh flowers last

Flowers are the one element that cannot be bought early. Set up everything else in advance so the last two hours are calm rather than frantic.
